Flying with a pet can turn an ordinary trip into a memorable adventure. But travelling with an animal can also add an extra layer of planning, especially when it comes to navigating airport security.
Knowing what to expect before you arrive at the checkpoint can help you move through the security screening smoothly and confidently.
Preparing for the flight
When you’re travelling with a pet, you don’t need to overhaul your carry‑on. The same security rules apply to anything you bring for your animal.
Solid pet food is allowed in your carry‑on, but liquids and non‑solid foods, like wet food or anything spreadable, must follow the standard liquids rule:
- Each container must be 100 ml or less.
- All containers must fit into one 1 L clear, resealable bag.
- Pets do not receive an additional 1L bag allowance.
Anything larger than 100 ml must go in checked baggage.
Airlines may have their own requirements for carriers, documentation, or in‑cabin travel. Since those rules vary, it’s important to check your airline’s policy before you fly.
What to expect at the security checkpoint with your pet
When you arrive at the checkpoint with your pet, screening officers will guide you through the process and may offer the option of using a private search room. Some travellers prefer this quieter space, especially if their pet is anxious or easily startled, but the screening steps remain the same whether you stay at the checkpoint or move to a private room.
During screening, you’ll be asked to:
- Remove your pet from its carrying case
- Take off any items attached to your pet, such as jackets or accessories (collars and harnesses can stay on)
- Keep your pet close and under control throughout the process
The empty carrier and any items you remove will be screened separately.
Once your pet, the carrier, and any related items have been fully screened, you’ll place your pet back into the carrier and continue on your way.
